WALKING IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF ST. PAUL
Depart Sunday, September 29th
DAY 1: Sunday, September 29, 2019 • Departure
Our journey begins as we board our
flight to Thessaloniki, Greece.
DAY 2: Monday, September 30, 2019 • Thessaloniki
Upon arrival at the airport in Thessaloniki, we meet our guide.
En route to our hotel we stop for Mass.
Dinner is at our hotel tonight.
DAY 3: Tuesday, October 1, 2019 •
Philippi, Kavala, Thessaloniki
After breakfast we board our coach and drive to Philippi, the
first city in Macedonia to hear the gospel. Then we continue
on to Kavala (Neapolis) where Paul landed in Europe. We
celebrate Mass during our visit to Lydia’s Baptistery, where
the first woman was baptised on European soil. Then we
return back to Thessaloniki for dinner at a local restaurant.
DAY 4: Wednesday, October 2, 2019 •
Thessaloniki, Berea, Kalambaka
This morning we explore Thessaloniki. We drive along the
waterfront to the massive White Tower and nearby
Triumphant Arch of Gallerius, built in 303 AD. We see St.
Demetrios Church with its valuable mosaics and frescoes.
Then, we drive to the upper town for a marvelous view of the
city. The site where the monastery of Vlatadon was built is
believed to be the location where Jason’s House once stood
and where Paul was accommodated during his visit to
Thessaloniki. Then we proceed to Veria and visit the “Bema”
where St. Paul used to stand while preaching. There are
several possibilities for Mass today as we
reflect on Paul’s journey.
Later we drive to Kalambaka for dinner and overnight.
DAY 5: Thursday, October 3, 2019 • Meteora - Athens
Today our first stop is the Meteora monasteries, perched
precariously on summits of grey rocks pinnacles of varied and
beautiful shapes. The monasteries date back to the 14th
century when the monks sought refuge in the cliff side caves
and then fled higher to build the original wooden shelter, later
transformed into monasteries. We have Mass today in one of
these high places. Afterwards we drive to Athens past
Thermopylae. We overnight in Athens.
DAY 6: Friday, October 4, 2019 •
Embarkation on the cruise – Mykonos
This morning we transfer to the port of Piraeus and begin a 3-
day cruise. Our first port of call is Mykonos, famous for its
windmills, countless tiny chapels and narrow cobblestone
streets. This maze of narrow lanes was purposely designed to
defy both the wind and pirate raids.
Mass today is likely on board ship.
DAY 7: Saturday, October 5, 2019 •
Kusadasi - Patmos
Today we stop at Kusadasi. We depart the ship to visit one of
the world’s foremost ancient city ruins of Ephesus. Around
noon, our ship sails for Patmos, where John the Divine
recorded his Revelation. We visit the monastery of St. John,
with its courtyard, the monk’s dining room and the
magnificent main church of Grotto of the Apocalypse, where
we see the niches in the wall that mark the pillow and ledge
used as a desk by the author of the Book of Revelation and
the crack in the rock made by the voice of God. We have
Mass on Patmos before returning to our ship. B, L, D
DAY 8: Sunday, October 6, 2019 •
Heraklio - Santorini
Early in the morning, we arrive in Crete where we have the
option to visit Knossos Palace, the home of great Minoan
Civilization and the mythological home of Zeus. Later today
we stop at the island of Santorini. The great view in the
Aegean Sea, the volcano, the narrow lanes and the
picturesque villages with their numerous small churches, are
some of the characteristics that make the island unique.
DAY 9: Monday, October 7, 2019 •
Corinth - Athens
Our cruise ends in Athens today. After disembarking from
our cruise ship, we drive to Corinth with a short stop at
Corinth Canal. The town of Corinth was the site of extensive
ministry to fledging and beloved Christian community. After
exploring Corinth where we also have Mass, we head for
Athens. En route, we stop for a wine tasting.
DAY 10: Tuesday, October 8, 2019 • Thursday– Athens
Today we explore Athens. We see the ruins of Parthenon, the
Erechtheum and the Propylae. Then we proceed to Mars Hill
where Paul spoke to the ancient Athenians about the true God
(Acts 17:22-34). We see by the House of Parliament on
Syntagma Square, the Evzones in their distinctive uniforms
guarding the Presidential palace and the Tomb of the
White Tower Meteora Monasteries
Unknown Soldier. We also see the Library, the University, the
Temple of Olympian Zeus, Hadrian’s Arch and the
Panathenaic Stadium where the first Olympic Games were
held. We have Mass this evening before dinner.
DAY 11: Wednesday, October 9, 2019 • Thursday– Athens
This morning we visit the Monastery of Penteli where we visit
with the monks and learn about their life at the monastery.
After a typical monastery lunch prepared by the monks, we
have free time this afternoon. Tonight, we have a farewell
dinner at a restaurant overlooking the Parthenon.
DAY 12: Thursday, October 10, 2019 • Departure
The journey with Paul ends today. We transfer to the Athens
airport for the departure flight to the USA.
